Club news

·      The District Installation is September 25 at the Courtyard by Marriott in Springfield.  The Governor and new Lieutenant Governors will be installed.  Lynn is going.

·      Someone else from Kiwanis should attend the Montgomery Citizens Leadership Academy.  Lynn and I went through it and it is very worth the time.

·      Gilbert Sheard’s words of legal wisdom were that if a police officer thinks you are speeding his visual judgment is enough to convict you.

Program

Bridgid Mercer is the Development Director for the Alzheimer’s Association of Greater Cincinnati.  She said one of eight people over 65 have Alzheimer’s and half of people over 85 do.  It slowly kills brain cells and eventually causes death.  Average time from diagnosis to death is 10 years, but it can take as long as 20 years.  Dementia can be caused by other things such as insufficient blood flow to the brain, but 70% of dementia cases are due to Alzheimer’s.

They have several free services. The Alzheimer’s helpline (1-800-272-3900) can answer questions and give referrals.  They also have family support groups, family care consultants, online caregiver coaching, and several other services.  Their website, www.alz.org/cincinnati, is very helpful.  It gives the 10 warning signs.  If you can’t remember the way home you are in trouble.  I went up to Bridgid after the meeting to thank her for coming but I couldn’t remember her name.

Their main fund raiser is the Memory Walk October 2 at Sawyer Point.

Future Meetings:

·      Wednesday, September 8 – No program yet.  Everybody think of a program and tell Bill Siegel.
